Concentrated fruit, depth and complexity in 13.6% alcohol. Rich cassis laced with signature Virage minerality, like wet crushed stones.

The 2011 growing season was especially cool for Napa Valley, but hey, it's always cool in Carneros. The ripening season is more Maritime (less warm days but warmer nights) than the dramatic diurnal temperature variation upvalley, where hot days can shut down vines, causing that unhappy outcome of high sugar and green tannins that we associate with Cabernet Franc from a hot place. Upvalley, with the always-cool nights, Cabernet Sauvignon growers need their warm days, but universally panning the vintage for lack of heat in Rutherford dust is not the whole story. In the more temperate Carneros foothills, we had enough warmth.

Nonetheless, the success of this vintage was hard won. Unforgiving rains at harvest created lots of extra fun sorting out botrytis both in the field and at the winery, but gratefully even our highest-elevation blocks achieved optimal ripeness of aromatics, flavors and tannins. Being a small producer helps in a trying vintage; friends literally shook every vine ahead of the picking crew to drop out rotted berries--and then sorted some more at the winery tables, both clusters and berries.

Way too easy to drink right out of the bottle with no decant needed, but this Virage gains complexity and depth with exposure similar to the beloved 2007.

JAN2021: Slightly shy on opening, but mineral and succulent pomegranate will be swirling out of the glass after ten minutes. Gains weight and depth within about 30 minutes... Really solid balance, lovely grip of sour cherrysucculence in the length. Stay tuned for Day2 tasting.
